Participants no longer at their original school were surveyed at an alternate time and location. A total of 557 individuals participated in this study, of who 196 (35.2%) identified their gender as male, 347 (62.3%) as female and 13 (2.3%) as “other”, “neither” or “both” genders. Regarding sexual orientation, 429 (77%) reported being heterosexual, 56 (10.1%) bisexual, 30 (3.6%) gay, 13(2.3%) asexual, 12 (2.2%) pansexual, 6 (1.1%) lesbian, 1 (0.2%) queer, 11 (2%) were questioning or unsure and 6 (1.1%) reported “other” sexual orientation. Regarding couple relationship status, 385 (69.1%) of the participants had a steady partner in the three months before COVID-19. The state-of-the-art literature represents the first attempt to understand the changes in couples’ and individuals’ sexuality, during a stressful situation such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

These same studies also demonstrated increased solo masturbation, while research from Australia (Coombe et al., 2021) demonstrated a decline in solo masturbation. Canadian work observed that solo masturbation decreased over time among adults without a romantic live-in partner (Brotto et al., 2022). Social & Cultural Geography

From a methodological perspective, our use of a large, multinational sample expands the boundaries of what is currently available in the COVID-19 and sexual health literature. Another methodological strength is online data collection, which facilitates survey completion in a setting of the participant’s choosing, thereby increasing data confidentiality and participant comfort with answering questions about potentially sensitive topics, like sexual behavior. Online data collection additionally permitted a safe and feasible way to ensure ongoing research during the pandemic when many studies with in person recruitment had to be halted so as not to increase participant COVID-19 risk (Luetke et al., 2020). Table 1 displays the sample level prevalence of overall patterns of change in sexual behaviors.

All over the world, the primary aim was reducing the spread of the virus by adopting containment measures including mobility and sociality restrictions, and closure of non-essential production activities and services. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the majority of governments around the world began implementing measures to interrupt the spread of SARS-CoV-2.

In reality, they are being recruited as “sexting” workers, paid on a per-text basis to engage in sex chatting, charging roughly 1–2 Euros per message with clients who are led to believe the workers are participants on a social media-based dating site. Workers are provided background files on clients, including photos, histories, and other social media intelligence, and present themselves as interested potential romantic or intimate partners. The entire process is mediated via algorithmic processes that monitor worker productivity and monetize all interactions between clients and employees.
